If you’re a book lover who is always on the lookout for a charming independent bookstore, I highly recommend E. Shaver, Bookseller. Bonus points—it has cats!
Every time we make a trip to Savannah, I always drag my boyfriend into this shop. It’s easy to find since it’s located right off Madison Square on Bull Street, one of the main streets in Savannah’s Historic District. The bookstore actually has two locations, so be sure to note which one you’re visiting: the original downtown location and another in the Starland District.
The bookstore’s building was constructed in 1842. Before becoming a bookstore, it served as both a private residence and an antique store. In 1975, Ed and Esther Shaver purchased the building and transformed it into the beloved bookstore it is today. According to the bookstore’s website, the Shavers sold the business to their longtime employee, Jessica, in 2015.
One of the best parts of visiting is meeting the bookstore’s four resident cats: Bartleby, Mr. Elliot, Skimbleshanks, and Morticia. If you’re lucky, you might spot one—or even all four—during your visit.
As you approach the iconic storefront, you’ll be greeted by a cheerful chalkboard sign and beautiful flower-filled planters. Once you walk through the blue double doors, the friendly staff at the checkout area will welcome you before you begin exploring the shelves.
One of my favorite sections is the children’s area—especially now that I’m going to be an aunt! They have adorable books for young readers, along with an entire collection of classic children’s stories that have a wonderfully vintage look.
If you make your way toward the back of the store, you’ll find an old typewriter where visitors can type a note and pin it to the wall. It’s such a fun and unique touch. And, of course, you may be fortunate enough to encounter one of the bookstore cats. Just remember to respect their boundaries. Cat people know exactly what I mean!
If you stop by during your next visit to Savannah, let me know what you think in the comments!
